BORON – A Little Known Mineral Worthy to be Known

Minerals are basic elements on which life is built. Scientific investigations regularly bring proofs of their vital importance for any form of life[1]. This effect is done in synergy with 17-estradiol[15]. It seems that boron is for the parathyroids what iodine is for the thyroid.

Boron deficiency causes the parathyroids to become overactive, releasing too much parathyroid hormone which raises the blood level of calcium by taking out calcium from bones and teeth. This leads to osteoarthritis and other forms of arthritis, osteoporosis and tooth decay. High blood levels of calcium lead to calcification of soft tissues causing muscle contractions stiffness, calcification of endocrine glands, especially of the pineal gland and the ovaries, arteriosclerosis, kidney stones, and calcification of the kidneys, and ultimately to kidney failure. Boron deficiency combined with magnesium deficiency is especially damaging to bones and teeth. Thus, it becomes easy to understand that boron is a key element for the prevention and remedy of osteoporosis, and our boron deficiency explains why this disease is so common in the western world.

Boron exhibits anti-inflammatory[16], [17], [18] and anti-cancer activities[19]; it participates not only to the health of bones but of the joints as well[20], and it was found to be efficient for fighting breast[21], prostate[22], uterus and lung cancers[23]. Boron is necessary to normalize the production of insulin in the pancreas and its release in the blood[24]. This is particularly interesting for people suffering of diabetes type 2 and 3, and for better controlling obesity, and inflammatory processes through reduction of C-reactive protein[25].

Boron acts also on the enzymes implicated in the synthesis of hormones[26], particularly steroid hormones and vitamin D.[27] Thus, sexual hormones production is increased with boron supplementation; in men testosterone may increase naturally as much as 30 to 50% over the basic level and in women progesterone and oestrogen are also increased[28]. These hormones may be increased in women at menopause, without exogenous hormone therapy. Boron supplementation resulted in a twofold increase in 17-estradiol levels, a greater than twofold increase in testosterone concentrations (from 0.31 to 0.83 ng/mL), and a significant increase in calcium retention, which is of high importance in postmenopausal women. The testosterone increase participates to the maintenance of the muscular mass and strength, and the normalization of progesterone and oestrogen avoids not only hot flashes or night sweats, but more importantly the cardiovascular complications[29] and osteoporosis[30], [31]. Boron helps our vasculature to stay healthy, thus avoiding coronary heart diseases[32], and this happens in both sexes.

Because boron increases the serum sex hormones, some people questioned the safety of taking boron for breast, prostate and uterus cancers. This is because they missed the fact that all cancers start with disruption of the membranes integrity. Boron is the key for membrane integrity as remedy to cancerisation. This explains partially the efficiency of boron in the control of lungs, prostate, breast and uterus cancers.

Boron fights joints diseases[33] – rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis—and together with a healthy nutrition allows the regeneration of thorn out cartilages in the joints[34]. More than 70% of the population is affected by pain and joints diseases in areas with boron deficiencies, while in the places where boron is abundant, less than 10% of the population suffer from joints diseases[35], [36]. Thus, it is proven fact now that low boron intakes result in impaired bone health, brain function, and immune responses[43], [44], [45]. This is because dietary boron influences the activity of many metabolic enzymes with impact on the metabolism of steroid hormones and several micronutrients. Boron plays a role in improving lipid profiles, and it protects DNA against free radicals damage and toxins such as those made by molds, inclusively aflatoxin B1[46], a genotoxin found in many foods such as peanuts, peanuts butter, raisins, figs, corn, cereals, etc. It was also shown that boron protects against the damage done by aflatoxin B1 to human hepatocytes and lymphocytes[47]. Aflatoxin B1 is the most potent pulmonary and hepatic carcinogen, and in children its mutagenic effect is higher than in adults. Boron increases the availability of glutathione in the body, therefore increasing the detoxification capability of tissues and organs[48], mainly in the elimination of free radicals[49]. Boron was shown to increase superoxide dismutase (SOD) in men and postmenopausal women[50]. SOD is a main free radical (superoxide) scavenger.

Boron reinforces the visual acuity, strengthens the hair and nails and increases skin elasticity.
